Helena Vasques — Tides of Colour

For its autumn exhibition, Musée Lumen brings together thirty works by the Portuguese abstractionist Helena Vasques (1921–1998), including the recently restored triptych “Marés”.

Marés III (1961) — detail. Film by the Vasques Foundation, Lisbon.

Curated with the Vasques Foundation in Lisbon, the exhibition follows the artist from her early gouaches of the Azores to the large-format oils of her late Paris years. A reading room presents her notebooks, shown outside Portugal for the first time.

Vasques painted the sea the way others wrote diaries: every day, and never the same way twice.

Marta Coelho, chief curator

The exhibition runs until 15 February. Guided visits every Saturday at 3pm, included in the admission price.
